Restaurants, a food store, a gym, a nail salon … a bike shop?! Driving through this shopping center at Medlock Bridge, I expect to see the first few stores, but not so much the last one – The Bicycle Wheel. As surprised as I am when I walk in and am immediately hit by the smell of rubber and oil, I see where this can be any cyclists little slice of heaven right here in town. Nestled between an array of other stores, this shop truly stands as a treasure among the rest.

You see, The Bicycle Wheel is a family-oriented company that seeks to provide families with everything they need for their next biking adventure. We’re not looking at a store that merely sells bicycles, no sir. We’re talking about an establishment that not only sells top-of-the line bikes and accessories for all your biking needs, but one that also repairs and maintains the one you already have right in the shop. From the avid two- or three-wheeled enthusiast to the leisure-seeking outdoorsman, everyone is sure to find just what he or she is looking for here. The minute you walk in the door, you can tell this shop is unlike any other.

The idea for The Bicycle Wheel was born in 2002 when owner Scott Jones had a vision for friendly bike service, which grew to a storefront establishment in 2004 and has recently moved to its new, spacious location. To celebrate, get settled in and let the public know about the new location, they are holding a Grand Opening and Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Aug. 7. A full day of fun is planned as their usual Saturday morning ride (which occurs every weekend from April to October) will take place at 8 a.m. along with a post-ride breakfast, vendor exhibits from a number of brands they carry, children’s activities featuring a blow-up gym, a meal from Boudreaux’s, rider demonstrations and much more. Best of all, the event is completely free! So pack up your crew and explore the wonderful world of cycling – it just may become your family’s newest pastime.

If you already enjoy cycling, perhaps you are familiar with The Big Creek Greenway. This 12-foot wide concrete path wanders through the woods along Big Creek, parallel to North Point Parkway. This trail is for bikers, skaters and joggers alike, but no cars are allowed, making it safe for all ages. Plans are to extend the greenway north and eventually connect with the Forsyth County trail system. In the long run, when development is finished, the path will expand approximately 15 miles in Forsyth County. For more information on the greenway, visit www.bigcreekgreenway.com.

Go see what biking treasures are hidden at The Bicycle Wheel. The X’s made by the wheel spokes mark the spot!
