To some, popcorn is just popcorn, something to be savored at a movie theater or a sporting event. To others, popcorn is a light and salty treat that can be combined with other flavors like cheddar and chocolate to create the ultimate snack. Marietta’s Murphy’s Popcorn, which is now celebrating its first anniversary, caters to the second group, creating an entire gourmet shop dedicated to popcorn. Sure, the basics are here, like butter, cheddar and caramel, but Murphy’s more unique offerings are as varied as the flavors at your favorite ice cream parlor. In fact, owner Tim Murphy has been collecting recipes for the past two years, and always seeks new combinations.

Murphy’s pops its corn fresh every morning, then spices it up with 12 to 14 different flavors each day, and customers can test out each one at a sampling bar at the front of the store. Candied flavors run the gamut from green apple and watermelon to cherry and chocolate-drizzled caramel (the perfect fix for your sweet tooth), while more savory options may include creamy ranch, nacho cheese, sour cream & onion, pizza, spicy Cajun or tart dill pickle – a crowd-pleaser and one of this editor’s favorites. And Murphy’s uses only the finest ingredients for their fun flavors, like real dill, pure vanilla and Tabasco brand pepper sauce, ensuring the best tasting popcorn around.

Once you find a flavor that fits your fancy, fill a carryout bag, gift bag, gift tin, gift box or party bag for a gourmet snack that stays fresh for weeks. Tins in 2-, 3.5- or 6.5-gallon sizes are also available for purchase online. The only downside to popcorn this good? The movie theater variety won’t ever be the same.
