The green movement may be sweeping the country like a fad, but when Ford Smith Fine Art of Roswell reviewed its art processes and practices, the contemporary gallery found that it didn’t need to follow the masses; the act of “going green” was already developing naturally.
Internationally acclaimed artist Ford Smith has been known for his earthy artwork with its vibrant and optimistic nature. His work was already an obvious tribute to the green outlook, but upon a closer examination the gallery realized that the signs of “going green” were far and wide in almost every area of the company, including art and office supplies, marketing programs, charities and shipping.
The company examined itself and was surprised to see how well it was already doing in the area of conservation. Notably, the acrylic paint that Smith uses is more environmentally friendly than oil-based paint and has a lower level of hydrocarbon emissions. All of his prints are produced with giclée inks and coatings, which are solvent-free and only use water-based, environmentally friendly products. Ford Smith’s giclées are also created from Torino canvases, which are produced by the decidedly environmentally conscious company InteliCoat. The company’s environmental philosophy has some of the highest standards of waste reduction, solid waste management and air management.
In his personal efforts to aid conservation, Ford works to limit paint waste by keeping his palette covered in between uses so that it stays fresh and can continue to be utilized. Also, in order to save canvases as well as enhance his creative ability, Ford will often reconsider unfinished paintings he had set aside and rework them into new works of art. – Erin Dillard
